The Warrior Embodiment- Okoye
Head of Wakandan Royal Armed Forces and General of Dora Milaje, the fiercest loyal soldier and protector of Wakanda and T’challa who will lay her life down to save her King and Wakanda. She is also the wife and lover of W’kabi- chief warrior of the Border tribe.
She is seen as one of the greatest warriors of their time, 2nd in command during the reign of T’chaka(father of T’challa), a staunch believer of traditions. Kilmonger’s disrespect for traditions triggered her rebellion against him. She will stand with all her strength to make sure the traditions of Wakanda is never altered. While Nakia called on T’challa to aid those in need since they have all the resources and can do it better, Okoye still stood reminding Kilmonger and everyone in Wakanda that Wakanda has been in a hide since its inception and it shouldn’t change because this will cause them to be attacked by predators from all works of life, it will change their way of life and how things are done in Wakanda; she feared the power of vibranium getting to wrong hands which can destroy not just Wakanda alone but other nations inclusive.
"I am loyal to that throne. No matter who sits upon it."―Okoye
Loyalty is the trademark of her position as the General of the Royal Armed Forces of Wakanda, she is torn between her friendship with T’challa and her service to Kilmonger when Kilmonger overthrew T’challa.
She later rebels against Kilmonger leading the Dora Milaje against the Border tribe after he decided not to complete the challenge with T’challa for the throne; T’challa did not yield neither is he dead, so the challenge must continue.
Her loyalty does not deter her from voicing out her opinions and submissions when things are not going the way they are supposed to go, either to T’challa or Kilmonger. She would do everything in her power to remind you the path you are taking as a King is not the path of old therefore you ought to do the right thing the right way.
She is a perfect example of a self-confident persona; she is proud of her baldness and showed discomfort when she ought to wear a wig to Busan in Korea when on a mission with Nakia and T’challa to chase Ulyses Klaue and let him for his evil deeds in Wakanda when he told their vibranuim and triggered a bomb at the bother leading to thousands of lives been lost.
She knew what she was made of and would not let anyone tear that down from her, she is wise, intelligent, strong, a fighter; a skilled martial artist and combatant.
Fighting inner and outer battles with her own self, trying to understand why her husband W’kabi will turn a blind eye and support the evil of Kilmonger just because he killed a man who is the cause of the lost lives of his parents. When the Jabari tribe joined in fighting the Border tribe, W’kabi saddled a Rhinoceros to take down M’baku which would had turn a bloody sight against Wakanda, she saw the Rhino saddled towards M’baku and she intervened, then charged towards her husband telling him to drop his weapon, W’kabi asked ‘would you kill me and my love?’ She answered with all passion and confidence “For Wakanda”. Now this is the kind of woman needed in dealing with most vital issues. She would not compromise love for her nation though she was not happy, she is focused and brave as well. Trust me it is only bravery and assertiveness that can quicken a woman to hide love and go for what she aimed at.
From my research, the name Okoye is of a Nigerian origin which is mostly used now as a surname which means Protector, another scholl of thoughts says it is of Native American origin which means strength. Either ways the name itself tells the potency and power of the persona bearing the name and it is evident in the character Okoye in Black Panther.
